![]() I thought it would make sense if I paid $950 to get in the space to replace the part, I might as well choose the original heater core. According to them, it is better to get a genuine heater core and the cost of the part is $325. Today I asked the mechanic to fix it without any luck with a discount. $1300 is a reasonable price for this job, depending on where you live, but you might be able to negotiate a few $100 dollars off if you're lucky. Either way, the AC needs to be drained and then re-filled after the dash is back in place but usually there is no parts charge for that except for a $3 pair of o-rings on the AC lines. You might ask them if they know about this and if they'd be willing to try it. The official VW way is to take the dash apart but there are some shops that do it the fast way. It involves taking the entire dash off in one piece instead of taking it apart piece by piece. There is also a 'fast way' to do a heater core replacement. You might want to negotiate that instead of the labor. Parts are nomrally marked up but last time I looked, good heater cores were about $100. $950 in labor is about right for a heater core replacement but $350 for the part seems high to me. That's not something a professional mechanic would usually do since they need to guarantee their work and it's a bit of a hack solution. Some folks (including me.) have fixed that problem by inserting a metal sleeve inside the plastic pipe of the heater core. Hopefully, I will leave good news at the end of the thread. It is an old car so I will need to spend time and money to take care of it. This is my update and I will keep you updated when I decide to fix it there. The owner told me that this is the worst case when it comes to the coolant leak issue. My problem is that what they are asking for the work seems to be very expensive and I feel like there is no way to get away with it if the job is that difficult. Especially if they need to take apart the whole dash area, I want to make sure this is done properly and I feel like they will do a good job. I always liked to visit them and I liked the mood between them(owner, mechanic, and receptionists) as a team. I will hear from them tomorrow morning and I will need to decide whether to fix it there or somewhere else. The car is in the shop and I asked them if they can lower the labor cost. Luckily, it did not hurt anyone because the mechanic told me it could burst and catch fire in the worst case but I am so glad the warning sign went on today in the morning when my family was about to start driving together. It makes sense that the car is using the hot coolant water to heat the interior space but it is unfortunate that it certainly leaks and I need to fix it at a big expense. ![]() It was fine two days ago and two days without using the car and I learned that I have to spend over $1,000 to fix the heating core which I did not know if that is even existing behind the dash. I asked why they think this happened and they said it is because the car is old. I asked them if we could weld it and they said no. According to them, the mechanic will need to spend 9.5 hours removing the dashboard area to reach the heating core to fix it and it will cost $950(labor) and$350(part) for the job.
